Eye Rub Condition in Praying Mantises
Praying mantises are fascinating insects known for their unique physical characteristics and predatory behavior. Sometimes praying mantises are too curious, and develop "eye rub" when housed in captivity.
What is Eye Rub Condition?

The eye rub condition refers to the behavior where a mantis constantly scrapes its head against the walls of the enclosure, which can harm its eyes. This action is often triggered by visual stimuli from outside the enclosure, prompting the mantis to attempt to reach or engage with what it observes. The resulting friction may result in dark spots on the eyes, which could lead to blindness or infections.
Causes:
Eye rub occurs due to the mantis's instinctive behavior of attempting to interact with something it perceives outside its enclosure, such as another mantis, a person, or any moving object.
Symptoms:
The most noticeable symptom is the appearance of black spots or lesions on the mantis's eyes. In severe instances, the eyes may become infected or even rupture. (with eye rub) (without eye rub)
Prevention
To prevent eye rub, it's important to reduce visual stimuli from outside the enclosure. This can be done by:
Separating mantises: If you have several mantises, house them in individual enclosures, blocking their view, to prevent them from focusing on one another.
Blocking the view: Use opaque materials or mesh to cover the enclosure walls, preventing the mantis from seeing outside.
Minimizing movement: Avoid placing the enclosure in areas with significant activity.
Treatment
If you detect eye rub, it's crucial to take immediate action.
Isolate the mantis: Relocate the affected mantis to a quieter, less stimulating setting.
Clean the enclosure: Ensure a clean environment to prevent infections.
Seek professional help: If the eye rub is severe or shows signs of infection, consult a mantis expert, which we have many of on my Discord Server!
Conclusion
As long as you house your mantises with a blocked view, this condition should be very preventable. However, are some mantises that will still rub their faces against the walls because they are very curious.
